Mexico for a month 2026
We left Winnipeg on February 1st after an extremely cold, snowy and windy January. A Westjet direct flight took us to Cancun and a Mayan descendant driver we had met two years ago picked us up from the airport and drove us to Playa del Carmen. The weather for the first full week was extremely comfortable, with highs between 21 and 24 degrees Celcius, lows between 14 and 17 degrees, the humidity a reasonable 40% ish and partly cloudy skies.
Then the normal weather showed up. The highs are consistantly 27 - 29 degrees, the lows only 20 - 22 degrees, the average humidity is about 65% (it’s close to 95% when the temp cools to 22) and bright sunny skies.
Our condo is in a perfect location for us. Norbert’s daily walk to mass only takes about 12 minutes, the great running track is about a 2 minute walk, the beach is a 6 minute walk and a big grocery store is only a 3 minute walk. The famed pedestrian (tourist) Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) is half a block away. Our street is a one way leading to a pedestrian zone and it only gets very local traffic so it is pretty quiet during the day, except for construction sounds like jackhammering backhoes. Our condo does not have windows that seal so whatever sounds are outside, get heard quite clearly inside. Sounds such as a midnight serenade from a Mariachi band, a frenetic sounding chihuahua, and frequent trumpet solos entertain us almost every evening.
The furniture in our condo is very comfortable but the king bed should be replaced because it is not as firm as it likely used to be. The kitchen is well equipped, although we don’t use the oven because it is a gas oven with no numbers on the dial, so we have no idea what temperature it would be. The internet works well for the most part. The entire block lost power twice for under an hour each time on two separate occasions.
We finally took an excursion to Chichen Itza, the Mayan ruins included in the New 7 Wonders of the world. The reason we had not gone before was the almost 3 hour drive to get there. The tour we took brought us also to a Mayan village and a cenote on the way to the ruins and, on the way back, to Valladolid (a town Josh Gates visited in an episode of Expedition Unknown). It was quite a hot day and we appreciated the air conditioned coach we were in.

Other than this excursion, walks to the grocery store, beach and church, we spend our time cooling off in the unheated pool that our balcony overlooks and doing our normal emails and computer work. Norbert was making up trivia questions for this year’s tivia night at St. Charles on March 21, and I am working on a novel. Our phone plans include Mexico for calls, texting and data so we are just as connected here as we are at home - just virtually though. I do miss family so we video chat about once a week.
